Empowering individuals through music.
Kendall Layt
Therapy Assistant
BMus.

Kendall is a musician, bringing over 20 years of experience, with a passion for learning about brains. During a double bass lesson equally as long ago, his teacher recommended the book he was reading. That book was, 'The Brain That Changes Itself,' a book on neuroplasticity, by psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge M.D.. Once Kendall read this book, his journey of both curiosity and fascination for psychology, neuroscience and Oliver Sacks books began. When Kendall discovered that there was a career that combined his love of music and psychology, his plans to pursue becoming a session musician or music teacher were immediately replaced with becoming a music therapist.
Kendall completed a Bachelor of Music, specialising in Jazz Performance in 2017, then pursued a trade to take a break from studies. In 2024, he decided after unintentionally working in the trade for almost a decade, it was time to sit down more and commit to his goal of studying music therapy. Through training, working and educating as a Barber, Kendall realised that the part of his job he valued the most was his work with other neurodiverse individuals, people living with disabilities, mental health challenges and terminal illnesses. Kendall is due to complete his Master of Music Therapy studies through The University of Melbourne at the end of 2026.
Kendall is a neurodiverse person, with lived experience in various mental health and disability settings. He has been working to support children to learn music using inclusive and creative strategies to help participants learn musical instruments in unique and individual strengths-based ways. Kendall also has a keen interest in adaptive instruments and the modification to make instruments more accessible to individuals with disabilities. He has a strong commitment to providing a holistic, neuro-affirming, person-centred approach to his services and understands the importance of empowering individuals through a collaborative creative process.
Outside of work and study, Kendall enjoys spending time with his partner and their two dogs, Muffin and Bruce, who unfortunately were not motivated enough to become therapy dogs. He is a self-proclaimed ‘music nerd’, plays in two bands, loves a DIY project that involves a trip to Bunnings and committing half of the year to being very attentive to the NRL season.
